This is the first part of my Bulgaria trip, Flying from London to Sofia via Munich I arrived in the post communist country not knowing what to expect. When you arrive at the airport, it's best to talk to the taxi stands within the terminal and arrange a price (to the city centre shouldn't be more than 15 leva) - however on the way back they tend to over charge (we ended up paying 27 leva) For our 4 nights in Sofia we stayed in the Nightingale Hostel in Slaveykov Square - also home to the (apparently) largest outdoor book market in Europe, but I guess they just don't have too many outdoor book markets. Sofia is quite easy to walk around, but if you want to tackle the trams, then good luck because not many people speak English. If I had one tip for Bulgaria, it's learn the Cryillic alphabet as just to read street signs and tickets is a God send.
