After the Valle de Bravo was dammed for hydro - electric power in the 1940's it became a recreational area of sorts which today is used primarily as a weekend and holiday retreat for the wealthy from Mexico City. West of Toluca, the Colonial era town still retains much of it's charm, and though a great deal of the lakeside has now been built up with private properties, there are still protected portions of beautiful pine forest perfect for hiking and camping. Sailing and boating are prime activities when the weather is warm. Also, the forests outside of town are known to attract millions of Monarch Butterflies during the winter part of their migration
